This gender reversal of Jesus's character is another way of saying God is full of motherly love for all her children. She says that God is so loving, the limitations of the metaphor "God is father," are too constricting. She reports having ecstatic moments of prophetic transcendence, where she was united with the love of God, and she reports no malice in the character of God. Who wouldn't want love to be the answer? And yet, it takes boldness to say what Julian said. ![]() Paul called the "mystery of the Gospel." Love as the answer How can a loving God create suffering animals in a world full of evil? The question points Julian to what St. ![]() Because evil exists, and because God "made everything that exists," there is a dilemma that Julian quickly isolates as a question above all other questions: The theodicy. The question revolves around the existential problem of evil. Is God evil or good? That is a forbidden question in certain religious communities, but Julian goes there in the first section of her book. Finley’s thing at the time was that every recruit of his had to have a flashy nickname. It’s one of the best nicknames in all of sports.ĭo you know why they called him Catfish? I always thought it was because he looked like a catfish. Catfish is so much cooler sounding than Jim. Thing #1: Catfish Hunter’s real name is Jim Hunter. My favorite chapter so far was about Catfish Hunter and free agency. It’s a long and interesting book about the evil business that operates behind Major League Baseball. The book selection this time around is Lords of the Realm by John Helyar. Put simply, throughout his career Ellison regularly called out fans on their BS. Anybody who actually believes that should probably ask themselves how Ellison could have possibly gotten away with so public a murder, but there is a reason why the idea of the pugnacious author inflicting violence upon a fan might be easily believed. One story-a false one-that plagued Ellison is that once, at a science fiction convention, he threw a fan down an elevator shaft. Many stories about him, true and false, created a public image of the late writer of speculative fiction (his preferred term) that often overshadowed his work. ![]() Harlan Ellison’s reputation tended to precede him. ![]() |
